Holi Legends

Holi is an important Hindu festival celebrated in the month of March-April on Phalgun Purnima. There are lots of legends associated with this festival.

First legend is of Prahlad and Hiranyakshyap. There was a demon and King, Hiranyakshyap who regarded himself as god and desired that everybody should praise him. He had a son named “Prahlad” who went against the will of his father and started to praise, Lord Vishnu. Hirnakashyap got very angry and wanted to get rid of his son.His sister had a blessing or what we call as boon that she fire/flame cannot harm her. So to kill his son, he requested his sis, Holika to set herself on fire along with prahlad sitting on his lap. Legend says that Prahlad was saved because of his excessive devotion for lord vishnu while Holika died for her scary wish. From this day the custom of 'Holika dahan' came into existence.

Second legend is of Radha and Krishna. Krishna used to find immense pleasure in applying colour on Radha and gopis. Later this became a pattern of Holi celebrations.

Third mythology says that Holi is also celebrated in the because of death of the devil Pootana who tried to kill lord Krishna by feeding poisonous milk.

Fourth Mythology which is popular in south India is related to Lord Shiva and Kaamadeva. Lord shiva was meditating and he used to punish those who disturbed them but Kaamdeva took a risk and revoked Lord Shiva from meditation to save the world.
